H. Levesque et al., SEQUENCING OF A 9.2 KB TELOMERIC FRAGMENT FROM THE RIGHT ARM OF SACCHAROMYCES-CEREVISIAE CHROMOSOME-XIV, Yeast, 12(3), 1996, pp. 289-295
We report the complete sequence of a 9 . 2 kb fragment next to and inc
luding the right telomere of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome XIV.
Four open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 100 amino acids were obser
ved in the sequenced segment. One ORF (378 codons) does not show any s
ignificant homology with proteins in the databases and corresponds to
a putative new gene. Two ORFs are almost identical to the known YCR007
/YKL219 and PAU1-like hypothetical protein families already identified
on several S. cerevisiae chromosomes. These ORFs, whose function is u
nknown, are generally associated with sub-telomeric regions of chromos
omes. The fourth one shows significant identities with bacterial manni
tol dehydrogenases. It could be a yeast gene implicated in the metabol
ism of mannitol (or a related substrate). The sequence has been deposi
ted in the EMBL data library under Accession Number X86790.
