Structure and phase transitions in H-bonded complexes of poly(acrylic
acid) with salts of beta-N-dimethylamino-4-alkyloxypropiophenones were
studied by LR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, and optic
al microscopy: Specific binding between polyacid and salts of beta-N-d
imethylamino-4-alkyl- and alkyloxypropiophenones leads to the formatio
n of thermotropic LC phase. The structure of LC phase can be regarded
as a smectic (lamellar) phase characterized by the layer order of side
chains with complete overlapping of alkyl ''tails'' and a confocal te
xture.
