Sorption, transport, and mechanical properties of chitosan-poly(acryli
c acid) interpolyelectrolyte complexes of various compositions were st
udied. It was found that these complexes are stable in aqueous solutio
ns at pH 5 - 8 and show high dialysis permeability to law-molecular-ma
ss water-soluble compounds. Their permeability is comparable to that o
f commercial hydocellulose membrane Diacell, which is presently used i
n medicine. The rather high mechanical properties of the films of chit
osan-poly(acrylic acid) interpolyelectrolyte complexes, combined with
the high transport properties, make it possible to use these. films as
separation membranes, particularly, far pervaporation separation of o
rganic aqueous mixtures.
