Historical eruptions of Rincon de la Vieja, Costa-Rica, were explosive
and originated from a summit crater, which is partially filled by a l
ake. Our study demonstrates the hydromagmatic character of the 1966-19
70 and 1991-1992 eruptions. They result from the interaction between a
shallow magma body, the crater lake and an active hydrothermal system
. The most serious hazard during future eruptions is primary mudflows
in the valleys on the northern flank, caused by the expulsion of the l
ake water by a violent explosion.
