Abstract
A sedimentary core (15.50 m long) was taken with a piston corer from a barge in the centre of the crater Lake Sonachi analysed for sedimento logy (magnetic susceptibility) and geochemistry (organic matter and ca lcium carbonate) and radiocarbon dated. Two lacustrine phases are reco gnized between 7,400 and 3,200 a BP and between < 2,000 a BP and the p resent. The first phase of high lake-level is also recorded in the nei ghbouring lakes Naivasha, Nakuru and Elmenteita, and in several other East African lakes. This Holocene period is also marked by some volcan ic explosions.
