Abstract
A model is proposed for the idealized structures of the non-stoichiome tric Ta2O5:MOx phases which, possess the structure of the low-temperatu re form of Ta2O5. These are described as consisting of slabs of a beta -U3O8-type structure of variable width linked by slabs of alpha-U3O8-t ype structure which are of constant width. These structures are consis tent with the shift-lattice interpretation of the diffraction patterns and provide a crystal chemical basis for the formation of such phases .
