Abstract
A simple d-p tight binding model is employed to study the TiC(111) sur face. We show that it reproduces the observed titanium terminated TiC( 111) surface relaxation and we demonstrate that the observed Ti surfac e termination is a consequence of the difference in the evaporation ra tes for carbon and titanium atoms at the surface. The carbon atoms eva porate much faster than the titanium atoms.
