This paper describes a sequential multiresolution surface modeling tec
hnique, The initial model consists in a surface triangulation resultin
g from the integration of a set of range views. Thereafter, a hierarch
ical triangulation algorithm iteratively removes vertices of the trian
gulation, always minimizing the retriangulation error. The equiangular
ity of the surface triangulation is optimized in 3-D space throughout
the optimization process. Besides compressing surface information, the
proposed technique preserves the topology of the triangulation and su
rface orientation discontinuities. Experimental models built from comp
lex multipart objects with holes are presented. (C) 1996 Academic Pres
