Df. Senior et al., SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF BOTRYOID RHABDOMYOSARCOMA IN THE BLADDER OF ADOG, The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, 29(5), 1993, pp. 386-390
A 10-month-old male Labrador retriever with a 10-week history of stran
guria, pollakiuria, hematuria, and urine retention had a large botryoi
d rhabdomyosarcoma resected from the trigonal region of the urinary bl
adder. Resection was aided by submucosal injection of saline to establ
ish a dissection plane. A cuff of the ureteral mucosa was sutured to t
he bladder wall in an attempt to prevent ureteral stricture. Postopera
tive complications included urine retention due to stricture of the pr
oximal urethra and rupture of the right renal pelvic collection system
with urine extravasation. Balloon dilation corrected the urethral str
icture, and the ruptured pelvic collection system resolved spontaneous
ly. Adjuvant chemotherapy included four cycles of doxorubicin (30 mg/m
2 BSA IV) and cyclophosphamide (75 mg/m2 BSA PO on days 4, 5, 6, and 7
). As no evidence of tumor recurrence was apparent 21 months after sur
gery, this is the first reported instance of a prolonged clinical remi
ssion for this tumor type in the dog.
