The Fe-P bond in low-spin pentacyanoferrates(II) of the type Na3[Fe(CN
)5L](L=phosphine or phosphite) has been characterized by P-31 NMR and
cyclic voltammetry. The chemical shift in the P-31{H-1} NMR spectra in
creases with the redox potential on the cyclic voltammogram. A linear
dependence of the chemical shifts on the redox potentials has revealed
that the pi-back donation from the iron d(pi)-orbitals to the phospho
rus d(pi)-orbitals plays an important role in the character of the Fe-
P bond.
