Electrooptic effects in a free-standing film of ferroelectric liquid c
rystal have been studied. The threshold field of the electrooptic effe
ct in the free-standing film is negligible compared with that in a san
dwich cell. The response time of the electrooptic effect in the free-s
tanding film is much shorter than that in a sandwich cell. These effec
ts have been interpreted in terms of the strong influence of the glass
surface of the sandwich cell.
