B. Deo et al., THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF DESULFURIZATION BY CALCIUM CARBIDE POWDER INJECTION IN 400 TON TORPEDOES, Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, 48(6), 1995, pp. 441-446
Kinetic model of desulphurization incorporating transitory reaction in
plume zone and permanent reaction at top slag-metal interface is appl
ied to desulphurization by calcium carbide powder injection in 400 ton
torpedoes at Hoogovens IJmuiden. Fraction of powder particles entrain
ed in gas bubbles depends upon gas now rate. Overall increase in perce
ntage desulphurization at higher gas now rates is primarily due to inc
rease in the mass transfer coefficient in the bulk metal and in the pl
ume region. Practical aspects of the effect of nozzle design on desulp
hurization in torpedoes are also discussed.
