We consider easily computable and reliable error estimators for the ap
proximation of linear elliptic boundary value problems by nonconformin
g finite element methods. In particular we develop both element-orient
ed and edge-oriented estimators providing lower and upper bounds for t
he global discretization error. The focal contributions of these estim
ators may serve as indicators for local refinement within an adaptive
framework.
