D. Mellor et Av. Metcalfe, THE MODIFIED TURNING BANDS (MTB) MODEL FOR SPACE-TIME RAINFALL .3. ESTIMATION OF THE STORM RAINBAND PROFILE AND A DISCUSSION OF FUTURE MODEL PROSPECTS, Journal of hydrology, 175(1-4), 1996, pp. 161-180
Methods are developed which project two-dimensional radar rainfall dat
a into one dimension such that the overall storm profile can be measur
ed. As a result, it is found that the storm width and velocity can be
measured accurately, but the estimation of rainband width and rainband
velocity remains elusive. Thus it is concluded that more work has to
be done involving many real storms so that the problems of estimating
these parameters may be understood more fully, leading, it is hoped, t
o suggestions for new approaches. As regards longer-term work, the var
ious roles which the Modified Turning Bands (MTB) model may play in th
e estimation and forecasting of rainfall are discussed, and the potent
ial for the model in the investigation of the rainfall-runoff characte
ristics of catchments is outlined.
