Gc. Cadee et al., WHY THE WHELK (BUCCINUM-UNDATUM) HAS BECOME EXTINCT IN THE DUTCH WADDEN-SEA, Netherlands journal of sea research, 34(4), 1995, pp. 337-339
The disappearance of the whelk from the western Dutch Wadden Sea start
ed in the mid 1920s with a gradual decline due to overfishing and leth
al shell damage by fishing gear. When fishery stopped in the early 197
0s, tributyltin-based (TBT) antifouling paints had become into use. Su
ch paints caused imposer and possibly reproduction failure in the whel
k leading to its local extinction. The whelk will disappear from large
r parts of its present distribution area if fishery-free areas do not
become effective, and if the use of TBT-based paints continues.
