The transmission properties of crystal fibres grown by the Laser Heate
d Miniature Growth technique are described. The characteristic feature
s of the output pattern are attributed to Fresnel diffraction of the a
xial light together with interference between it and the totally inter
nally reflected light. Collimation and spatial filtering are investiga
ted as methods by which the pattern may be converted to one with a nea
r-Gaussian intensity profile.
