We have modified a commercial Ti:sapphire laser to allow optical phase
stabilization to an extremely stable semiconductor laser, which in tu
rn is locked to a Doppler-free resonance in a cesium vapor cell. For t
ime scales from 10 mu s up to several hours the combined system has a
rms linewidth of 4 kHz with respect to the cesium resonance. The syste
m allows the resolution of extremely narrow resonances in a cloud of t
rapped atoms.
