The formulation of the inverse diffraction problem for scalar acoustic
s on the basis of the formalism of the matrix Green's function is disc
ussed. This formalism greatly simplifies the analysis of many acoustic
flaw-detection problems by: facilitating the identification of scatte
rer types; reducing the required number of spatial and frequency measu
rements of the scattered field for reconstruction of the scatterer; pr
oviding a natural approach to the solution of inverse problems for sca
ttering by flaws with clearly delineated boundaries.
