Ion-molecule reactions of trihalomethyl cations generated from Freon-1
2 (CCl2F2), Freon-14 (CF4) and carbon tetrachloride studied in high pr
essure source of mass spectrometer show facile loss of oxygen atom fro
m many nitro compounds. It has been shown by unimolecular dissociation
in the field free region and by charge exchange spectra that the oxyg
en loss occurs through the formation of unstable adducts and during th
e collison process in a major pathway.
