Superoxide ion (O2-) generated in situ by electrochemical reduction of
molecular oxygen in dimethylformamide at mercury cathode, acts as an
effective nucleophile with tosylates (1a-5a) of phenol, alpha-naphthol
, beta-naphthol, p-cresol, cyclohexanol and ditosylates (6a-7a) of res
orcinol and hydroquinone affording phenols (1b-7b) in good to excellen
t yields.
