Abstract
Morphological and physiological indices of parr-smolt transformation o f fish from anadromous and nonanadromous hatchery-reared populations o f Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were compared. Both anadromous and non anadromous Atlantic salmon showed a complete smolt colouration and had a similar high gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity (significantly (P < 0.05) different from that of parr), indicating both morphological and physio logical aspects of parr-smolt transformation. The evolutionary stabili ty of the parr-smolt transformation of nonanadromous Atlantic salmon i s discussed.
