During the last 5000 years, Holocene morphogenesis from the southern A
lps To the Mediterranean area allows to evaluate both the role of clim
atic oscillations and the change induced by human settlement. It is de
monstrated that the increase in human pressure was not necessary coeva
l with the erosive and torrential crisis. It appears that morphogenic
activity has been quite diverse (spatial intensity and diachronic natu
re of erosional episodes) in relation with the specific climatic condi
tions of the period considered and the mode of exploitation and techno
logical level of societies.
