Abstract
The pion electromagnetic mass difference is obtained within the framew ork of QCD sum rules in the chiral limit. The theoretical result, DELT A-m(pi) = (m(pi+) - m(pi(0))em = 4.4 +/- 1.1 MeV, is in good agreement with the experimental value (DELTA-m(pi))exp = 4.43 +/- 0.03 MeV. The technique developed here can be used to calculate the electromagnetic mass difference for other members of the pseudoscalar octet and also makes it possible to take into account explicitly corrections due to t he nonzero masses of the quarks.
