The behavior of three-dimensional fermionic and bosonic models with dy
namical generation of mass in an intense electromagnetic field is stud
ied. It is shown that the action of a magnetic field on the dynamical
mass of a fermion is closely related to the chiral properties of the f
ermion model. In particular, for the chirally invariant Gross-Neveu mo
del a magnetic field always induces a transition to a chirally noninva
riant phase, in which the dynamical mass of the fermion is determined
by the intensity of the external field. It is also shown that in an ex
tended CP(N - 1) model a magnetic field leads to the formation of a co
ndensate of the dynamical Abelian field in the vacuum, and polarizes t
he vacuum of the neutral bosons.
