Dissolution of a commercially available lead crystal glass (24% PbO) i
n different concentrations of ethyl or methyl alcohols was studied at
temperatures between 25-75 degrees C for durations of 0.5-6 it. increa
sing the concentration of alcohols increased the release of lead and d
ecreased the release of Na, K and Si as well as the weight loss The am
ount of Pb released by both alcohols were significantly lower than tha
t of Na, K or Si. Weight loss was slightly higher in the case of ethyl
alcohol. The results obtained were explained by considering the mecha
nisms of attack by which different cations are released from lead alka
li silicate glasses by aqueous solutions and the solubility of reactio
n products in the attacking solutions.
