Thermal stability and thermal behavior of nanoparticulate alpha-Fe2O3-
stearate alternating Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer have been studied th
rough temperature dependent FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that t
his multilayer has an excellent thermal stability. From 60 degrees C t
o 150 degrees C, the alkyl chains in the multilayer can keep ''all tra
ns'' configuration and the Fe2O3 nanoparticle multilayer film structur
e still remains an order structure. From 200 degrees C to 220 degrees
C, the film undergoes a phase transition from solid to liquid. This hi
gh melting point is due to the high molecular weight (at least 105 ato
mic weight units for one nanoparticle) and the stearate ions are chemi
cally bonded to it.
