Abstract
A new side chain liquid crystalline polymer with biphenyl mesogenic gr oup has been prepared. This polymer forms a bilayer smectic A phase th rough intermolecular hydrogen bonding according to the result of X-ray diffraction. Its phase transition was studied uning DSC and polarized optical microscopy. Infrared spectroscopic measurements show that cyc lic dimeric hydrogen bonds of carboxylic acids are embedded in the bil ayer.
