All blast furnaces within Usinor Sacilor are presently equipped with c
oal injection systems. A significant drop of coke rate has resulted fr
om the progress in the understanding of the basic phenomena related to
coal injection and simultaneously from a good operational control of
the technique at each step of the process. The key point for a further
reduction of coke rate is the proper process control of the blast fur
nace, especially with respect to the gas distribution in the hearth an
d the shaft. Advanced control techniques are to be used to achieve sim
ultaneously low heat losses, good protection of the walls together wit
h high gas efficiency and smooth operation.
