Abstract
This paper reviews and evaluates two models commonly used to explain d ivorce rates for remarried couples. One of them, the model of the inco mplete institution, is conceptually flawed and empirically unwarranted . The other, a processual model that focuses on the merging of mini-cu ltures, is more powerful, although it, too, has limitations. A strateg y for strengthening the processual model is indicated.
