A method of determination of temperature and bulk composition of the e
arth's upper mantle was developed using profiles of shear and compress
ional wave velocities. The method is based on minimization of deviatio
ns of the calculated values of seismic velocity, concentration, and te
mperature from corresponding seismic, petrological, and thermal data.
The results of calculations of temperature and concentration profiles
(using the systems CaO-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) for the upper mantle under
the Canadian shield are presented.
