The .OH radicals are observed to react with azobenzene with a bimolecu
lar rate constant of 2.0 x 10(10) dm3 mol-1 s-1. About 40% of .OH radi
cals add to benzene ring producing a transient band with lambda(max) =
330 nm and approximately 60% add to - N = N - double bond forming a t
ransient band with lambda(max) = 420 (epsilon = 10,270 dM3 Mol-1 cm-1)
. The .OH radicals fail to undergo one electron transfer reaction with
azobenzene. Steady state gamma-radiolysis shows the formation of a pr
oduct absorbing in the 260-280 nm region.
