Ms. Reddy et al., BINDING BETWEEN OUTER-MEMBRANE PROTEINS OF NONTYPABLE HAEMOPHILUS-INFLUENZAE AND HUMAN NASOPHARYNGEAL MUCIN, Infection and immunity, 64(4), 1996, pp. 1477-1479
Bacterial colonization of the epithelial cells precedes infection. Muc
ins of the epithelial cell secretions modulate bacterial colonization.
This study was designed to understand the mechanism of mucin-bacteria
l interactions and in particular binding between nontypeable Haemophil
us influenzae and nasopharyngeal mucin(s). In an overlay assay, bindin
g appears to be mediated by outer membrane proteins P2 and P5 of bacte
ria and sialic acid-containing oligosaccharides of mucin.
