We study the propagation of intense light beams in a planar waveguide
made of quadratic nonlinear material in a second-harmonic generation c
onfiguration. We show numerically that under appropriate conditions in
put beams break apart into spatial solitons that propagate in differen
t directions, and we discuss the implications of such effects for the
realization of an all-optical switching device. (C) 1996 Optical Socie
