We describe 2 patients with chronic alcoholism who over a period of se
veral years developed epilepsy associated with a cerebellar syndrome a
nd action myoclonus. The clinical picture suggested progressive myoclo
nic epilepsy, but subsequent investigations did not confirm this diagn
osis. Myoclonus worsened during abstinence and was relieved during ind
ulgence. We believe that this special clinical syndrome should be reco
gnized as a complication of chronic alcoholism.
