A flow induced system, consisting of an elastically mounted body with
a pendulum attached, was analysed by Tondl and Nabergoj [A. Tondl and
R. Nabergoj, Non-periodic and chaotic vibrations in a flow induced sys
tem, Chaos, Solitons & Fractals 4, 2193-2202 (1994)]. Here, a system w
ith dry friction acting on-the body is considered. It is proved that t
he trivial solution is stable and that the semi-trivial solution (non-
oscillating pendulum) is unstable in the whole range of the flow veloc
ity. The non-trivial solution (both body and pendulum are oscillating)
exists only above a certain threshold. The analytical solutions are c
ompared with the results of numerical investigation. Vibration records
are complemented by mapping diagrams.
