An automated procedure based on available empirical formulae for penet
ration and perforation in steel objects is developed. A computer progr
am is written in FORTRAN 77 to solve these empirical formulae using va
rious material properties and dropped heights. Results obtained from t
hese formulae are compared with those obtained from the finite element
program OBAID. Flow chart and partial program listings together with
the output are given for those who wish to carry out in-depth study. T
his paper is the beginning of the vast Kuwaiti program of research wor
k on the safety analysis of oil rigs against impact and explosion.
