A comparison of some genera of the Condamineeae (Rubiaceae) with a few
taxa of closely related tribes (Rondeletieae, Calycophylleae, and Cin
choneae) revealed that some species of Chimarrhis (Condamineeae s. 1.)
, Bathysa (Rondeletieae), and Calycophyllum (Calycophylleae) are often
misassigned to genera. The taxonomic significance of calycophylls is
discussed; the generic boundaries of Chimarrhis, Bathysa, and Calycoph
yllum are reevaluated; and their similarities and differences are disc
ussed. As a result, a new calycophyllous species of Chimarrhis from th
e Amazon, C. gentryana, is described, two of its species are transferr
ed to Bathysa (B. Bathysoides, B. perijaensis), and one species of Bat
hysa (B. difformis) is reduced to synonymy under Chimarrhis (C. turbin
ata).
