Painful lesions on the plantar aspect of the interphalangeal joint of
the great toe respond well to surgical excision of the accessory bone
found lying superior to or within the flexor hallucis longus tendon. S
everal incisional approaches are available, each with potential advant
ages and disadvantages. Failure to consider each incisional approach a
nd address concomitant deformities may result in a less than desirable
postoperative result.
