Copolymers of 4-cinnamoylphenyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate
were prepared in methyl ethyl ketone solution using benzoyl peroxide a
s initiator at 70 degrees C. They were characterized by u.v., i.r., H-
1-NMR and C-13-NMR spectra. Their compositions were determined by H-1-
NMR technique. The reactivity ratios of the monomers were determined b
y the application of the conventional linearization method suggested b
y Kelen and Tudos. The weight and number average molecular weights of
the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. Therm
ogravimetric analysis of the copolymers was carried out in air. The gl
ass transition temperatures of the polymers were determined by differe
ntial scanning calorimetry. The photocrosslinking properties were stud
ied by irradiating the polymer thin films with a high-pressure Hg lamp
and measuring the changes in u.v. absorption spectra.
