Abstract
A one-step synthesis of substituted isoxazoles, 3-amino-6-arylpyrano[4 ,3-c]isoxazol-4-ones (2) and (3-arylisoxazol-5-yl)acetonitriles (4) by treating 6-aryl-4-methylthio-2-oxo-2H-pyran-3-carbonitriles with hydr oxylamine hydrochloride is reported; the intermediacy of -methylthio-4 ,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-yl)acetonitriles (3) delineates the mechanism of the transformation of 1 into 4.
