Abstract
Starting from Fermi liquid theory at elevated temperatures, March, Puc ci and Egorov have recently presented evidence for the existence of ch arged bosons above T-c in underdoped YBa2Cu4O8. Here a theory of T-c i s constructed which uses (a) the Bose-Einstein condensation formula, w ith effective mass m and Boson density n(b)(T-c), (b) experimental da ta on plasmons through the transition temperature to extract the tempe rature dependence of the Boson density n(b)(T), and (c) tunneling of h olons, with the Bosons assumed to be (r) over right arrow space biholo ns, the binding energy of the latter depending on tunneling matrix ele ments in both intra- and interlayer directions.
