Even before 1983, when the South African government relaxed the provis
ions of 1959 legislation imposing apartheid on tertiary education, a n
umber of universities had taken on the challenge of improving access f
or Black South Africans. After 1983, the number of interventions multi
plied rapidly, often with the support of U.S. foundations. This articl
e draws upon case studies of six universities, completed in February 1
993, to document progress, describe interventions, and develop implica
tions for the work that remains.
