The excited state proton transfer (ESPT) reaction of 4-methyl-2,6-diac
etylphenol (MAOH) in water and some alcoholic solvents have been studi
ed in presence and absence of base by means of steady state absorption
, emission and time resolved emission spectroscopy. Solute-solvent int
eraction appears to play a major role in determining the nature of abs
orbing and fluorescing species in these solvents. Solvent basicity is
the predominant factor in controlling rate and extent of ESPT reaction
of MAOH and orientational relaxation of solvent molecules has only a
minor effect on it.
