An attempt to use a simplified vortex model to study jet noise is repo
rted. Special considerations are given to relate the vortex ring prope
rties with jet how parameters, such as jet velocity, nozzle radius, an
d jet-structure Strouhal number. Results show good agreement with exis
ting low-Mach-number turbulence sound theories and experimental observ
ations of an initially laminar jet. They also give new insight into so
me well-established jet noise phenomena.
