Abstract
A new special stability control termed CAPS improves power system stab ility by exploiting the time-overvoltage capability of large shunt cap acitor banks. During low voltage emergencies, several series groups of wye-connected capacitor banks are shorted to increase reactive power output. We describe successful commissioning tests on a 241.5-kV, 168- MVAr capacitor bank.
