Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain A4-mediated 'hairy roofs' have been in
duced for the first time in leaves of in vitro-grown seedlings of Came
llia sinensis. The hairy roots originated at the proximal end of the y
oung leaves after 17 +/- 2 days of bacterial inoculation. These hairy
roots were cultured in hormone-free MS medium, and MS supplemented wit
h 1 mg/l NAA. Root biomass production was better in auxin-containing m
edium.
