The catalytic effect of dielectric packings inside the discharge gap o
n the yield of ozone generation was studied under silent discharge con
ditions. Porous silica of developed internal surface and quartz glass
grains were used as the packings. In the presence of coarser grains of
both materials, higher ozone concentrations and higher energy efficie
ncy were observed than with the finer ones. Porous silica was found to
be more effective than quartz glass. The higher activity of silica ar
ises from the surface structure rather than from its porosity.
