Abstract
We report on an element-specific study of the interfacial magnetic pro perties of 1 monolayer (ML) Eu on top of the Gd(0001) surface using ma gnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in 4f photoemission (PE). Divalent Eu forms a thermodynamically stable abrupt interface with trivalent Gd(00 01). 1 ML can be ordered as a commensurate two-dimensional hexagonal l attice (6x6 phase) on Gd(0001). 4f(6) final-state PE multiplets, which are well separated for Eu and Gd show large MCD at 15 K. It has the s ame sign for both elements. This demonstrates that 1 ML Eu is ferromag netically aligned with respect to the Gd(0001) substrate.
