Abstract
Unoccupied states of the correlated insulator MnO(100) have been inves tigated by core electron energy loss (CEELS) and appearance potential spectroscopy (APS) at the manganese 2p and oxygen Is threshold. The sp ectra show the dominant role of the empty manganese 3d states when cor e electrons are excited near the threshold. A comparison of both spect roscopies should give the possibility to evaluate the magnitude of the electron correlation U-dd. But at the oxygen Is threshold, no influen ce of the correlation is recognizable because here the ligand CEELS an d SXAPS spectra are similar to a large extent. However, CEELS and SXAP S at the manganese 2p threshold show different structures.
