Abstract
We investigate the dynamics of heavy ion beams at high phase-space den sities. We are especially interested in intrabeam scattering driven em ittance growth. The emittance growth rate is related to a relaxation r ate, which we extracted from molecular dynamics computer simulations. Large deviations from theoretical predictions occur in the case of str ong coupling. Finally, we make some conclusions relevant for beam cool ing.
